Abraham's Journey: Reflections on the Life of the Founding Patriarch
    Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik
Abraham's Journey, the ninth in the series MeOtzar HoRav: Selected Writings of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, focuses on the life of Avraham Avinu, founding patriarch of the Jewish People. Abraham is not only the first Jew, but also a historical prototype, his experiences and actions foreshadowing critical patterns in the history of his people. In addition, Abraham serves as a spiritual and ethical model to his descendants. He is a teacher, a paragon of kindness, a lonely iconoclast, a master of sacrifice, and a knight of faith. Through careful exegesis of verses, illuminating analyses of character, and insightful readings of classical commentators, the essays in this book seek both the eternal and the contemporary messages of the Abraham story.

    Biblia Herbaica Stuttgartensia
  • Alison J. Elliot. Child Language
    Child Language
    Alison J. Elliot
The way children learn their native language has been the subject of intense and widespread investigation in the last decades, stimulated by advances in theoretical linguistics and the behavioural sciences. For the student, this has meant a bewildering number of research reports, often differing in their theoretical viewpoint and the methodological approach they advocate, and apparently conflicting in their conclusions. "Child Language" provides the student with a cool, clear and concise survey of the most important recent research work, and puts into perspective the contributions made by Chomsky, Piaget and others. The research surveyed, though primarily of English-speaking children, includes studies of children whose first language is not English and bilingual children. Dr Elliot believes that the study of child language necessarily raises questions about the nature of language - is human language something only humans can learn? - and about learning itself - how does our ability to...
  • Claire Kramsch. Context and Culture in Language Teaching
Context and Culture in Language Teaching
    Claire Kramsch
This is an attempt to redraw the boundaries of foreign language study. It focuses attention not just on cultural knowledge as a necessary aspect of communicative competence, but as an educational objective in its own right, as an end as well as a means of language learning. Winner MLA Kenneth W Mildenberger Prize.
  • Edited by Joyce Merrill Valdes. Culture Bound: Bridging the Cultural Gap in Language Teaching
Culture Bound: Bridging the Cultural Gap in Language Teaching
    Edited by Joyce Merrill Valdes
"Culture Bound: Bridging the Cultural Gap in Language Teaching" is designed to give language teachers a basis for introducing a cultural component into their teaching. The articles give a perspective on how language and culture interact and explore in particular the difference between interacting with another culture and entering it: language students are encouraged to understand the new culture without necessarily embracing it. This selection brings together representative practical and theoretical material written by a variety of scholars and teachers in the field. The essays are organized under three headings: language, thought, and culture; cultural differences and similarities; and classroom applications. The collection as a whole brings both breadth and depth to a topic that has been strangely neglected despite its recognized importance.
  • Yirmiyahu Yovel. Dark Riddle: Hegel, Nietzsche and the Jews
Dark Riddle: Hegel, Nietzsche and the Jews
    Yirmiyahu Yovel
This brilliant and absorbing study examines the image of Judaism and the Jews in the work of two of the most influential modern philosophers, Hegel and Nietzsche. Hegel was a proponent of universal reason and Nietzsche its opponent; Hegel was a Christian thinker and Nietzsche a self proclaimed Anti Chris; Hegel strove to bring modernity to its climax, while Nietzsche wanted to divert the evolution of modernity into completely different paths. In view of these conflicting attitudes and philosophical projects, how did each of them assess the historical role of the Jews and their place in the modern world? The mature Hegel partly overcame the fierce anti Jewish attitude of his youth, yet continued to see Judaism as the alienation of its own new principles. Post Christian Judaism no longer had a real history, only a contingent protracted existence, and although modern Jews deserved civil rights, Hegel saw no place for them in modernity as Jews. Nietzsche, on the contrary, who grew...

  • Kwaku Boamah. Develpoments In Judaism And Christianity
    Develpoments In Judaism And Christianity
    Kwaku Boamah
This publication is a compilation of various research papers, on how Judaism and Christianity have developed from antiquity to the modern period. It therefore has two main parts; topics on Judaism and those on Christianity. The topics on Judaism looks at the Hasmonean period and the others focus on the impact of modernity on modern Judaism especially with respect to the concept of the Torah, women and intellectual development in Judaism. The first topic on Christianity looks at why the Old Testament was included in the Christian canon. The others deal with the persecution and martyrdom of the Christians while the next centers on the qualification for baptism in the early church; with interest in women, children and slaves. The final article discusses the role of women in the ministry of Jesus.
  • Elana Baurer. Diaspora and Belonging: Black Jewish Americans and the State of Israel
Diaspora and Belonging: Black Jewish Americans and the State of Israel
    Elana Baurer
This book explores the relationship that Black American Jews have with the state of Israel, and claims that for some Black Jews who are marginalized within the greater American Jewish community, close ties to Israel can increase their legitimacy. This project posits that social positionality can shape identity formation and examines perspectives of individuals who experience different levels of marginalization in order to examine how an individual's social position in the diaspora can affect that person's connection to a homeland. The extent of a Black Jewish person's marginalization in the United States depends on a number of factors including one's synagogue or the origins of ones ties to Judaism. While there is a continuum of experiences and identities within the diverse Black Jewish community, generally those individuals who are most marginalized in the United States tend to identify most strongly with Israel as their homeland.
  • John J. Gumperz. Discourse Strategies
    Discourse Strategies
    John J. Gumperz
To understand the role of language in public life and the social process in general, we need first a closer understanding of how linguistic knowledge and social factors interact in discourse interpretation. This volume is a major advance towards that understanding. Professor Gumperz here synthesizes fundamental research on communication from a wide variety of disciplines - linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology and non-verbal communication - and develops an original and broadly based theory of conversational inference which shows how verbal communication can serve either between individuals of different social and ethnic backgrounds. The urgent need to overcome such barriers to effective communication is also a central concern of the book. Examples of conversational exchanges as well as of longer encounters, recorded in the urban United States, village Austria, South Asia and Britain, and analyzed to illustrate all aspects of the analytical approach, and to show how subconscious...

  • Haggadah
    Haggadah
Read each year around the Seder table, the Haggadah recounts through prayer and song the extraordinary story of Exodus, when Moses led the ancient Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to wander through the desert for forty years before reaching the Promised Land. In this new version of the traditional Haggadah text, Jonathan Safran Foer brings together some of the most preeminent voices of our time. Nathan Englander's new translation, beautifully designed and illustrated by the Israeli artist and typographer Ozed Ezer, is accompanied by thought-provoking essays by major Jewish writers and thinkers, including Howard Jacobsen, Daniel Handler and Rebecca Goldstein.
