  • Brimonidine base-loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles for Ocular Delivery
Brimonidine base-loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles for Ocular Delivery
Using glyceryl monostearate or Precirol® ATO 5 as solid lipid in 4% w/w concentration in addition to 0.05% w/w Poloxamer® 188, as an emulsifier were optimum for entrapping the hydrophobic Brimonidine base. The prepared solid lipid nanoparticles formulations showed uniform, nanosized particles below 500 nm, suitable for ophthalmic application, of good entrapment efficiency and accompanied by a sustained Brimonidine base release, compared to both Brimonidine™ eye drops and Brimonidine dispersion. Glyceryl monostearate solid lipid nanoparticles formulation showed good corneal permeation and localization of the solid lipid nanoparticles in the anterior ocular chamber, acting as a depot for sustained Brimonidine base release. A significant (P ? 0.05) lowering in intraocular pressure compared to Brimonidine™ eye drops and excellent ocular tolerance were determined. It was concluded that; solid lipid nanoparticles formulation is a promising approach for ocular delivery of Brimonidine base to...
  • Cataract surgery and adjuvant treatments
    Cataract surgery and adjuvant treatments
Cataract extraction with intra-ocular lens implantation is a common procedure that in patients without retinal pathology is known to increase visual acuity and by that life quality. Pathologies of the posterior chamber of the eye, such as age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, have high prevalence and often coexist in patients with cataracts. For that reason, it is common to see these patients being subject to cataract extraction, arising concerns whether surgery could worsen retinal diseases, compromising visual acuity outcomes. Despite the existence of many studies addressing this subject, controversy remains whether these pathologies really worsen after surgery. This book reviews the combination of cataract surgery with adjuvant intravitreal anti - VEGF injection in patients with diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration.
  • Childhood Cataract
    Childhood Cataract
This book, a case study which was conducted in Bangladesh, illustrates the evaluation of management of childhood cataract and analyzes the post-operative visual outcome of the patients. It consists of secondary and primary data which was experimented on 500 eyes with cataract of 300 children. Patients those were under 2 years, irrigation and aspiration, including primary posterior capsulorrhexis with anterior vitrectomy were done. The authors explore that early recognition and early surgery are crucial in childhood cataract’s management; however, primary posterior capsulorrhexis and anterior vitrectomy would be recognized as mandatory step in all patients under 5 years as it successfully reduces the visual axis opacification. Furthermore, surgery is just only one intervention in the series of steps needed to restore the child’s vision. Prompt optical correction, proper postoperative care and regular follow-up are also significant part of management. This study would unlock further...

  • Control of ocular circulation
    Control of ocular circulation
In this volume Prof. Dr. Esmeralda Delgado summarizes the content of the research that led to her PhD thesis under the theme of the local control of ocular circulation in an isolated model of rabbit eye. The eye is our window to the world and the loss of its functionality has a profound and devastating effect on the way we interact with the environment around us. The ocular circulation comprises two compartments: a retinal and a choroidal compartment and the control of ocular circulation is a vital component in the maintenance of retinal homeostasis. Understanding the local control mechanisms is a key factor to the development of effective treatments to restore a normal retinal blood flow in disease situations. In this work we developed an experimental model of isolated rabbit eye to help clarifying the local mechanisms of control of ocular circulation, independently of other interferences present in an “in vivo” model. This in situ model mimics most of the vascular connections...
  • Effects Of Diabetes Mellitus On The Ocular Health
Effects Of Diabetes Mellitus On The Ocular Health
The aim of this study was to assess the ocular manifestations of diabetes and follow-up the results of treatment. Diabetes mellitus is a major cause of blindness in the USA and the leading cause of new blindness in working-aged Americans. Diabetic retinopathy alone accounts for at least 12% of new cases of blindness each year in the USA. This study focuses on progress and challenges in basic and clinical research on the ocular complications of diabetes. DR is one of the most common causes of visual loss in adults; therefore, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the management. Vascular leakage could impair neuronal function and also vision. Early detection of DR and timely intervention can reduce the incidence of moderate visual loss and severe visual loss in PDR. Diabetes mellitus is associated with measurable adverse impact on several common and important tasks of daily living, further implicating this condition as an important public health problem deserving increased attention...
  • Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) Power Calculation in Pediatric Patient
Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) Power Calculation in Pediatric Patient
Despite growing number of intraocular lens power calculation formulas, there is no evidence that these formulas have good predictive accuracy in pediatric, whose eyes are still undergoing rapid growth and refractive changes. This study is intended to compare the prediction error and the accuracy of predictability of intraocular lens power calculation in pediatric patients at 3 month post cataract surgery with primary implantation of an intraocular lens using SRK II versus Modified Formula (Pediatric IOL Calculator) for pediatric intraocular lens calculation. Modified Formula uses computer software for intraocular lens calculation. In this study, the prediction error and the accuracy of predictability of postoperative refraction in pediatric cataract surgery are comparable between SRK II and Modified Formula. The existence of the Modified Formula (Pediatric IOL Calculator) provides an alternative to the ophthalmologist for intraocular lens calculation in pediatric patients.
  • Ocular Morbidity Prevalence: An Indian Experience
Ocular Morbidity Prevalence: An Indian Experience
Every five seconds one person in our world goes blind--and a child goes blind every minute. These are alarming statistics. Yet,blindness is still perceived as a lower priority issue. Blindness has profound human and socio-economic consequences in all societies. The cost of education, rehabilitation and lost productivity due to blindness is a significant economic burden on families, communities and nations, particularly those in economically deprived areas of the world. Furthermore, in such settings, blindness is often associated with lower life expectancy. Thus, the prevention and cure of blindness can provide enormous savings and facilitate societal developments. People should be educated about causes of ocular morbidity, preventive measures, and appropriate treatment. Health education programmmes should target older age groups specifically and the population in general. The availability and accessibility of eye care services, particularly cataract surgery and refraction services...

  • Fiona Rowe. Visual Fields via the Visual Pathway
Visual Fields via the Visual Pathway
    Fiona Rowe
This textbook is a dynamic exploration of the relationship between the visual pathway and visual field impairments. Aimed at the practitioner or student of visual fields, the clinical focus of the book is oriented towards differential diagnosis and will assist the reader in identifying the site of a lesion. The emphasis is on detection and interpretation of visual field defects, rather than the background and psychophysics of visual field assessment. Discussion of the normal visual field is included for comparative purposes. The structure of the book traces the visual pathway anatomically from front to back, and is supplemented by information on methodology and programme choice.
