  • Charles Land-Reeves. "...Boy!" A Passage to Manhood
    "...Boy!" A Passage to Manhood
    Charles Land-Reeves
In 1939, at the age of six and just before the outbreak of World War Two, the author was uprooted from the Sussex countryside and tossed into the political and military cauldron of South East Asia to face the turmoil of wartime in the Philippines - first on the run in the jungle from the invading Japanese, then in an internment camp where, still a child, he came close to death. His mind further broadened by evacuation to the USA, he then fought a more personal battle for survival, this time against the stifling educational conventions of post-war Britain. Here, in this engrossing true-life account, Charles Land-Reeves unfolds a fascinating story of childhood innocence corrupted by and then triumphing over an uncompromising and often brutal reality. This second edition of a book first published in 1996 has been revised and corrected for its new appearance.

Examination Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Marburg, language: English, abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of America's most noted and highly praised writers, and a key figure of US literature. His works have contributed to the national identity and can be found in almost any curriculum of North American Literature Studies worldwide.Being a direct descendant of Massachusetts Bay colonists, the Puritan era of 17th and 18th century New England served as a lifelong preoccupation for Hawthorne and inspired many of his best-known stories. Hence, in order to understand the author and his works, it is crucial to apprehend the historical background from which they arose. Awareness of both the Puritan legacy in Hawthorne's time and their Calvinist beliefs, which contributed to the establishment of American identity, serves as a basis for fathoming the intention behind Hawthorne's writings. His forefathers' concept of wilderness was an important part of their religious life, and in many of Hawthorne's tales, nature can be perceived as an active agent for both plot and moral message. Therefore, it is indispensable to consider the development behind the Puritan perception as well as the prevailing opinion on nature during the writer's lifetime.Seclusion, nature, and Puritanism are constantly recurring topics in both the author's life and works, wherefore particular attention is paid to these. ...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, University of Hamburg (Sprach-, Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft), 59 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho has been labeled many things from "Brat Pack Fiction" to "Generation X" to "Minimal Realism". While the classification of the novel might be difficult and it has often been misunderstood for its extremely violent scenes, what is clear to the attentive reader is its critique of consumer cultureCritics have acknowledged an emergence of a large number of writings dealing with this topic in contemporary American literature in the recent past. These novels focus on the relationship of American youth with consumer culture with a seemingly non-elaborate content and style. Attempts of explaining this kind of writing, which has also been called "fiction of insurgency", "new narrative", "downtown writing" and "punk fiction", range from millennial angst to the classification of this literary movement as part of the postmodern culture. What seems clear is that these narrations are closely related to the society they have been created in. The way these texts incorporate products of their time as a constant accompanying element places them very clearly in a specific time period. The apparent non-existence of complexity concerning the style, which at times reminds the reader of a ...

    Cornelia Kaltenbacher
Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: Good, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistics), course: Contemporary Literature Theory and Criticism, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "Criticism, is the overall term for studies concerned with defining, clasifying, analysing, interpreting, and evaluating works of literature."1 What I'm going to analyze in this work is not criticism, but "theoretical criticism". Theoretical criticism proposes a theory of literature, in the sense of general principles, together with a set of terms, distinctions and categories , to be applied to identifying and analyzing works of literature, as well as the "criteria"2 by which these works and their writers are to be evaluated. Since the 1970s there has been a flood of writings, Continental, American and English, proposing diverse nove l and radical forms of critical theory. Why do we need criticism? In order to understand texts or to give them the "right interpretation"3. But can one speak about a right interpretation? In order to find a plausible answer to this question, I will focus on two of the most important modern literary theories, namely New Criticism, defined as "an achieved unity of meanings"4 and Deconstruction as "a galaxy of signifiers"5, comparing the two ones by means of the consulted essays on New Criticism an...

"America. Your People Changed my Destiny"
    Oscar A. Rodriguez
These American heroes, have not only touched me, but have touched hundred of other individuals. In about fifteen years, my world had completely changed. Americans, helped me birth. Americans helped me find hope through God's knowledge and practical training. And Americans have made possible my almost impossible dream. I thank God for America and I thank you America! Your people have completely changed my destiny! Where would I be, if my American heroes had never appeared in my life? I don't know, but one thing I am sure. I would not be what I am and would not do what I do today if it was not because of your help.

    Robert Elsemann
